In India, an Association was formed in 1955 to improve the quality and to co-ordinate the activity of qualified physiotherapists. In 1967 Indian Association of Physiotherapists has joined the World Confederation of Physical Therapy, which deals with development of the field, standardization of curriculum, research and development of latest approaches in physiotherapy.

It was a long felt need to form a branch of IAP in Kerala . In the year 1993 a few young and energetic members took very active interest to form a branch and with the approval and guidance from the central committee ,we were able to form a branch of IAP in Kerala named as Indian Association of Physiotherapist Kerala Chapter which was inaugurated on the 3rd of October 1993 at hotel Libra Medical College Trivandrum by the Hon: Speaker of the legislative assembly Sri P.P. Thankachan.

In this juncture we remember that this was possible only due to the coordinated and sincere efforts of our predecessors, former chief physiotherapists of Medical College, Dr. Radakrishnan (PT), Late Dr. George Samuel (PT), Dr. Mani Joseph (PT), and the efforts made by Dr. Sasidharan (PT), Dr. Mathew Varghese (PT), Dr. J. Padmakumar (PT), Dr. Mohan Mathew (PT) and Dr. P.V. George (PT). During this period, we used to organise a number of conferences, seminars and workshops at various places. Many of the professional matters were represented to the government, we were able to get positive result especially in revising the pay scale structure and amendment of qualifications from PSC in a short span of four years after the formation of the chapter we were Honoured by the IAP Central committee to host the 36th national conference during January 1998 which was held at Trivandrum.

Right now steps are being taken to upgrade the post of physiotherapists under DHS at par with those in DME. Now the association is taking the active steps to start a regular bachelor programme in physiotherapy in government sector.
